UL - Underwriters Laboratories, Inc.
Unbalanced Line - A transmission line in which voltages
on the two conductors are unequal with respect to ground. Generally
one of the conductors is connected to a ground point. An example
of an unbalanced line is a coaxial cable.
Underground Cable - Cable that is intended to be placed
beneath the surface of the ground in ducts or conduit. Not necessarily
intended for direct burial in the ground.
Unilay - A conductor with more than one layer of helically
laid wires with the direction of lay and length of lay the same
for all layers.
Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) - Twisted pair cabling
that includes no shielding. UTP most often refers to the 100
ohm Category 3, 4, & 5 cables specified in the TIA/EIA 568-A
standard.
USOC - Universal Service Order Code. Pronounced "U-Sock".
An old Bell System term used to identify a particular service
or device offered under tariff. Often used to refer to an old
cable color code scheme that was current when USOC codes were
in use.
